The 2110 Responsibility Map

In a professional ST 2110 installation, features are distributed across different hardware. Use this guide to understand "who owns what" as a signal travels through the plant.

1. The Timing Source (Grandmasters)
     Everything starts with a synchronized clock.
   • PTP Grandmasters (GNSS-disciplined): These are the "Source of Truth." Usually, two GMs feed the domain to ensure redundancy.
2. The Network Fabric (Switches & Routers)
     The network isn't just a pipe; it’s an active participant in timing and delivery.
   • Leaf & Aggregation Switches:
     • PTP Distribution: Acting as Boundary Clocks (BC) or Transparent Clocks (TC).
     • Traffic Prioritization (QoS): Mapping DSCP marks to queues.
     • Multicast Management: Handling IGMPv3 snooping.
     • Data Integrity: Supporting Jumbo Frames (MTU 9216).
3. Core Routers / L3 Switches:
   • Multicast Routing: Using PIM-SSM.
   • Path Selection: Utilizing ECMP.
   • Segmentation: Using VRFs to keep networks isolated.
4. The Endpoints (Cameras, Servers, Gateways)
     This is where the actual media is processed.
   • Hardware Interface (NIC): Manages timestamps and packet pacing.
   • PTP Client & Media Stack: Handles synchronization and ST 2110 streams.
5. The Management Plane (Controllers & Monitoring)
     The "brains" that oversee the entire operation.
   • NMOS (IS-04/05): Discovery and connection management.
   • Observability Tools: Prometheus, Grafana, etc.
